“Fieldnotes from an unrefined olfactory sensor”

Nature's symphony unfolds around, where a autumn breeze rustles through the leaves, carrying with it the cool, powdery, yet musky scent of earth topped with wildflowers. The soft, tinkling sound of water droplets cascades from the nearby creek, creating a soothing melody that harmonises with the vibrant chatter of industrious bees and ants scurrying about in their tireless pursuit of sustenance. Above, a chorus of birds songs in the air – a blend of sweet and lively notes, though their identities remain a delightful mystery. In the distance, the slow, resonant crow of the Tasmanian Raven echoes, adding a deep, sonorous layer to this natural orchestra, grounding. *Deep breath*

Fieldnote: I tilt my head back and lift my snout up, inhaling deeply to “gargle” the aromatic molecules, letting them swirl languidly to the back of my olfactory bulb, painting a textured and visceral sensation. The top notes – dense, crisp, fresh and a little musky, the middle – opulent and nutty, perhaps with an earthy woodiness, and the base notes settle in, offering a damp, lactic quality infused with herbal undertones. An exquisite sensory journey that conjured visions of whimsical forest spirits and mythical beings, entwined within the enchanting tapestry of the natural world.
